Marion-Polk Food Share & Salem Hoopla Strike Unique Partnership Against Hunger

Marion-Polk Food Share is excited to be teaming with Salem HOOPLA this year in a very unique partnership.

As teams begin battling through this year's 3-on-3 tournament towards 2009 HOOPLA Championships, they will also be battling hunger in our two-county area by helping Marion-Polk Food Share raise funds, food donations, and community awareness of hunger in our midst.

Just to give you some idea:

• last fiscal year Marion-Polk Food Share distributed over 4.7 million pounds of food in Marion and Polk Counties through its network of 83 member charities.

• A record average of 6,567 local families a month are eating out of emergency food boxes, up 13.2% compared to the same period last year.

• Half the children in Salem-Keizer schools depend on free or reduced price lunches for what might be their only meal of the day. That percentage jumps above 80% for several area schools and in some rural communities.

Ending hunger is no slam dunk.

Everyone needs to do their part. This year HOOPLA teams can compete both on the court and off, as Marion-Polk Food Share weighs in and reports throughout the tournament which team is bringing in the most in cash and canned or dry packaged food.

Supporters, sponsors, families, and friends of each team are encouraged to be creative in the next few weeks in coming up with ways to contribute as much as they can to put their favorite team over the top!

Prizes will be awarded.

Our goal is to bring in at least 40,000 pounds of food (or food dollars) to help fill the warehouse shelves at the food bank this summer.

West Coast Bank Sponsors Oregon's Premier 3-on-3 Basketball Event

West Coast Bank, the founding sponsor of Salem Hoopla, is once again sponsoring Oregon's largest and premier 3-on-3 basketball event on July 24-26, 2009.

Salem Hoopla 2009 will feature free Kids Clinic and numerous contests, including the highly-popular Slam Dunk Contest. The West Coast Bank Shoot-Turn-Shoot contest will feature a $25,000 cash prize. Bank employees will also be volunteering and competing at the tournament, which is held on Court Street near the State Capital.
